Sketch maquette
My starting point
· Capture unique and energetic public persona.
· Expressive arms
· Order paper
· Wind from the sea caught in drapery
· Engaging with her audience
· Inclusiveness - wide spread arms
· Drapery – clothes she wore at inaugural day in Parliament (as featured in Plymouth Museum)
· Astor inscription – composed with the same directness as the single-word inscription on the Churchill sculpture on Parliament Square, this is a tongue-in-cheek reference to Astor’s adversarial relationship with him.
After the photographs of the sketch maquette are my observations on the work.

What problems has the maquette thrown up?
· Tendency of the figure to appear stiff – it needs a lot more fluidity of movement and expression to make this composition work
· More attention to the ‘lean’ so that it is works from all angles….she looks a little over-balanced from one side.
· Portrait needs to reflect the engaging mood of the figure
· Might need more about Astor, perhaps with a more elaborate inscription or information board.
